Suicides And The Economy

In recent weeks, we have heard of more people taking their own lives, and some people who attempted to take their own lives, due to the financial meltdown. Unfortunately, this is becoming way too common, and I don't want to see it get any worse. Of course, we are living in difficult times, and yes, quite a few people are losing quite a bit of money. Lives are being turned inside out, families are losing their homes, moms and dads are losing their jobs, and some families may be torn apart. So, if there ever was a time to think about taking your own life, now would seem like the best time to do it. Right???? Of course not.

I think that part of the problem is that we, as a society, have become very materialistic, and that we put too much of ourselves into our possessions. We become the guy with the Harley or the girl with the Mercedes Benz. We must remember, no-one is immune to this financial disaster. We will "make our bones" on how we come out of this mess. As Americans, we have weathered many storms in the past, and I'm sure that we will have many storms to weather in the future. As Americans, we have a history of picking ourselves up, regrouping, and coming out fighting. This is how we will get through this financial meltdown, and we will be a stronger America and a smarter America going forward.

The loss of money or things is not a reason to take your own life. I know there some horrific things that happen to good people, things that would make you think that life is no longer worth living. But, you can always bounce back somehow. I honestly believe that the Federal Government needs to establish a national hotline and a website to help people deal with their grief at this time of need. Show them that help is available and it is right there when you need it the most. Even if the hotline or website only saves one life, it would be worth the time and effort.
