U.S. Debt Hits 9 Trillion Dollar Mark
Well, the U.S. Government has finally done it! We, the taxpayers of the United States, are in debt over $9,000,000,000,000.00. As shocking as it sounds, our spend-thrift ways and our ambitious politcians have put us into a debtor's prison.
To put it a different way in terms that many of us may be better able to handle; Imagine if the government decided to stop spending more than they brought in right now, and they actually balanced the budget. I know this is a foreign concept to many, if not all, politicians. But, if we could balance the budget, that would cure budget deficit, but would not handle the debt. The debt of nine trillion dollars would remain.
Assuming all of our creditors decided not to charge us interest, and assume we could repay 1 billion dollars a day, and assume we had a balanced budget, it would take approximately 25 years of living frugally to get us out of our financial problems.
The presidential candidates are not discussing this issue, and quite frankly, I don't like talking about it either. According to some estimates, the debt increases by about 1.4 billion dollars a day and currently stands at approximately $9,138,000,000,000.00.
